St. Louis Artists’ Guild / Literary Arts Section
Presents:

Social Networking for Writers

Thursday, Aug 23 7pm-9pm
Two Oak Knoll Park
Clayton, MO 63105

Authors need to do a lot of their own promotional work today. This doesn't mean attending wine and cheese socials, or hanging out at bars. Today this means maintaining a presence on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Google Chrome, and a professional blog. Next year, there might be something else. Wherever your potential readers are gathering online, you should be there, too.
Join us as we discuss how to navigate these social networking communities, and what to do once
you're there.

Presenters: John Newmark, Trey Dowell, Jeffrey Howe, Matt Quinn

May 24th - Researching Your Novel

Researching Your Novel
Presenters: Alix Johnston, Cindy Fehmel, Jeannette Landon
Readers love stories ripped from the headlines. Plots are more intriguing and settings are more evocative if they are credible. Characters, be they gangster, veteran, or faerie all benefit from research. Methods vary: Internet searches, visiting historic sites, and personal interviews all lend weight to your work. Even a writer's personal history and culture are valuable resources, though some things are best left to the coroner's report. Truth may be stranger than fiction, but fiction can't live without it. Make it work for you

Alix Johnston

Alix Johnston started by sharing her vitals 5'8", brown hair, green eyes- but then she prefers to let people find that stuff out on their own. Born in Louisville Kentucky, her family migrated to St Louis two decades ago. Somewhere between high school and college she developed a delight for writing. Fantasy, comedy and romance are the bulk of her writing; constructed of pixie dust, mythology research and… too much caffeine.

Cindy Fehmel

C.A. Fehmel is a librarian by day and a scribbler by night. Though no animals are harmed in her work, her spies and gangsters often end up in the morgue.

Jeannette (Jet) Landon

Born in New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment, Jet has been a writer for a lifetime, and pursuing publication for the last decade. As a former gallery owner, she is passionate about visual and performing arts and has always been an advocate for artists. Now she is letting her imagination run wild, weaving stories to delight and entertain.

Some poetry is written to be read on paper, other poetry is written to be read aloud.
The modern concept of Poetry Slams - competitive spoken word - began in the
1980s at Chicago’s Green Mill Cocktail Lounge.

Come join us for an evening of non-competitive performance poetry with several St.
Louis area Slam Poets. The evening will be hosted by John "Gavroche" Newmark
and Jenifer "Rimona" Wallace. Gavroche began competing at the late Wabash
Triangle Café's poetry slam in the fall of 1992. Rimona is a newcomer to the art
form.

John Newmark has been performing his poetry in the St. Louis area since 1992. His poems appear in Newspoetry, EOTU, New Verse News, The Landing, and Scared Naked Magazine.  He is happily engaged to fellow poet, Jenifer Wallace, and shares custody of a cat named Schrödinger.

Jenifer Wallace lives in St. Louis with her poet fiancé, John Newmark, and a black cat named Schrödinger. Her work appears both online and in print. She counts Fried Chicken and Coffee, Asinine Poetry, and Strong Verse among her credits.

Writers' Block - February 22, 2012

Type “Writer’s Block” into your favorite search engine and you come up more than 11 million results. Every writer has experienced it and there are as many cures as there are for hiccups.

The Literary Arts Section of the St. Louis Artists’ Guild is holding an open forum to discuss causes, symptoms and cures for Writers’ Block. Hosted by Shawn Mahoney. Professional and amateur writers of all genres are invited to bring concerns and suggestions to alleviate this common curse.

Gail Marshall writes poetry and has finished her first draft of a novel, Ancient Airs and Dances. A member of the St. Louis Writers Guild, the St. Louis Poetry Center, the Rossmoor Poetry Circle, and the “Looselies,” a feminist poetry collaborative. Her poetry has been published in The Scribbler.
